Department of Botany was established with the inception of the college in 1942 with the aim to deepen the understanding of plants and their significance for humanity leading to advancements in agriculture, conservation, medicine, and sustainable environment,
The department offers core botany courses and and Skill Development Courses for B.Sc programmes with various combinations.The strength of the department lies in the two core courses i.e., Botany and Horticulture in three major system, Single Major honours programme in Botany and value added of certificate courses on need basis.
The diverse courses offered by the department have helped students secure admissions in various universities and few students pursuing MS Botany in foreign universities also and meritorious awards like overall championship in Botany at District level for the year 2021-22 & 2022-23 and won cash prizes in various intercollegiate Botany competitions and selection of our Botany student for Youth parliament representing the state of Andhra pradesh
The department has been appreciated by MGNCRE, Ministry of Education GOI for the Green initiatives and sustainable practices on the occasion of World Environment day 2022 and 2024 and also appointed our faculty as District sustainability mentor by MGNCRE, MOE, GOI., Our faculty awarded Amritam sustainability award from Sustainable India of Sri Aurobindo Foundation .our faculty are contributing e learning resources for ccelms portal and are selected and appointed as state level subject experts,district level and state level coordintors by our commissionerate of collegiate education. Students are encouraged with various Endowment prizes and Merit Awards from the department for every year
In this digitalization era our department has taken steps to integrate information technology tools and platforms into the curriculum to enhance students' proficiency in the field of botany. As part of it we have introduced Digital herbarium, Digital garden,QR codes for plant information,
