EXHBITION ON PLANT PROPAGATION AND SEED TECHNOLOGY
The Department of Botany orchestrated a captivating exhibition following an enlightening workshop. Enthusiastic students from diverse academic streams such as BZC, MBC, and BtBC showcased a myriad of exhibits spotlighting seed technology, plant propagation, and medicinal plants.
Attendees were treated to a visually stunning array of displays, each meticulously crafted to educate and inspire. From innovative seed technologies to the intricate processes of plant propagation, every exhibit offered a glimpse into the fascinating world of botanical science.
Moreover, the department thoughtfully curated stalls offering a cornucopia of delights. Patrons had the opportunity to procure organic seeds, rare flowering plant varieties, as well as indulgent treats such as nourishing hair oils and all-natural cosmetics. It was a celebration of nature's bounty and a testament to the department's commitment to holistic botanical education and sustainable living.
WORKSHOP ON PLANT PROPAGATION AND SEED TECHNOLOGY Date:21-12-2023
The Department of Botany recently spearheaded a dynamic workshop and exhibition in collaboration with Horticulture Department centered around the pivotal themes of skill enhancement courses plant propagation, seed technology, and the latest advancements in agricultural methodologies. The focal points of this event were the revolutionary hydroponic technology and aquaponics, presenting novel solutions for contemporary agricultural challenges. P.Sireesha an esteemed Assistant Horticulture Officer, delivered an insightful PowerPoint presentation encompassing various facets of seed technology. She elaborated on sophisticated seed processing techniques and elucidated the intricate processes involved in grafting and plant propagation methods like cuttings and graftingAt the heart of the event, students showcased an array of innovative exhibits showcasing the practical applications of hydroponics ,vegetative propagating method, various exhibitis in seed technology like types of seed certification ,Monocot and dicot seeds etc. From cultivating microgreens and leafy vegetables within repurposed water bottles to harnessing waste materials for sustainable growth, the exhibits demonstrated ingenious methods for turning waste into valuable resources. Additionally, students showcased techniques such as cultivating microgreens in trays, offering efficient and space-saving solutions ideally suited for urban environments with limited space
BOTANY QUEST AT HINDU COLLEGE
On December 19, 2023, Hindu College’s Botany Department hosted an intercollegiate competition in honour of Dr. T. Rama Rao, a respected botany educator and author. The event, designed to emphasize the importance of botany, included a quiz, elocution contest, and group discussion, drawing students from multiple colleges. Government College for Women’s students participated actively, winning several cash prizes and securing the overall championship title, reflecting their academic excellence and the college’s commitment to botanical education.
FIELD TRIP TO TULASI SEEDS
The Department of Botany at Government College for Women (A), Guntur, organized a field trip for 60 final-year B.Sc. students to Tulasi Seeds Pvt. Ltd. in Ameenabad, Phirangi Puram (M), Guntur District on 30-11-2023. Accompanied by faculty members, the students had the opportunity to learn directly from experts in the field.
Sri Tulasi Yogish Chandra, the Managing Director of Tulasi Seeds Pvt. Ltd., welcomed and addressed the students. Scientist Umamaheswarao then provided an in-depth explanation of the cotton seed processing procedures. Key stages covered included ginning (separating the lint from the seed), treating seeds with sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄), grading seeds, and testing for the presence of the Bt gene. Following these steps, the seeds are packed and prepared for distribution to farmers. In the biotechnology lab, technicians demonstrated various techniques, including Pace electrophoresis, gel electrophoresis, and the ELISA test for detecting the Bt gene. The students found the visit to be informative and engaging.
As part of the skill enhancement course on “Seed Technology and Biotechnology,” this field visit was an essential addition to their curriculum. Additionally, horticulture students toured greenhouses, poly houses, and irrigation systems and learned propagation techniques, further broadening their practical knowledge in the field.

Uppalapadu Bird Santuary in Guntur dt is 5kms from Guntur town. Best time to visit is from Sep to Feb.Uppalapadu is a place of bird migration.
