AECC (Ability Enhancement Certificate Course): “Reading for Pleasureâ€
The department has designed and offered an Ability Enhancement Certificate Course, titled, “Reading for Pleasure” for the first semester B.A., English Major students. This course is offered as an introductory course for 30 days from 25-09-2023 to 02-12-2023 to create an aptitude towards literature among students from diverse disciplines. The entire course material was selected from the books published by the National Book Trust of India and was graded to suit the weekly progress of the students. The visual content of the books during the first two weeks is gradually replaced by the verbal content. The department has designed worksheets for each story to aid and check the comprehension of the students. The students were also checked for their oral reading skills. The final assessment was done on two levels with an oral presentation of their favourite story and a written test created from a new story.
Faculty Exchange Programme at P.B. Siddhartha College, Vijayawada
The Department of English, GCW (A), Guntur has exchanged an MOU with the Department of English, P.B. Siddhartha College of Arts & Science. A Faculty Exchange programme was organized as a follow-up activity on 15-11-2023. Dr N. Santhi Sri Devi and Dr G. Seshu from the department were invited to train V Semester Computer Science students at P.B. Siddartha College of Arts & Science on Interview Caveats and Workplace etiquette. The programme was conducted in an interactive mode for two sessions and proved to be helpful to the students before attending campus drives.
Write Your Way to Employment (A Two-Day Workshop on Writing Skills Required for the Job Market)
The department has conducted an exit-level workshop for two days on 23-11-2023 & 24-11-2024 on writing skills for the benefit of V semester students. The workshop was held in four sessions to equip the students with certain necessary and specific writing skills to face the screening for higher education or a job interview. The sessions on Resume preparation, Workplace correspondence, Essay writing and Writing a Statement of Purpose for admission into universities abroad delivered by eminent resource persons were received well by 116 final-year students.
A Field Trip to Guntur Book Festival
The department has organized a field trip with first-semester students on 21-12-2023. Approximately forty students were taken to the Guntur Book Festival to create awareness of the various books available in the market. Students came to know about some popular publishing houses that specialized in publishing books on literature, science and technology, biographies and autobiographies. Many of the students purchased books useful for competitive exams.
Extension Activity at Samarthanam Trust for the Disabled, Guntur
The department reaches out to the unreached sections of the society as a part of the flagship programme titled, ‘Ananta Mythri’. An extension activity was conducted at Samarthanam Trust for the Disabled, Guntur for two days on 29-12-2023 & 30-12-2023. Faculty from the department trained the differently abled people staying in the trust on basic communication skills such as letter writing, e-mail composition and interview skills prescribed as a component of the Livelihood Resource Project offered by the trust.
Two-Day National Level Webinar on ‘Narratives of Identityâ€
A Two-Day National Level Webinar titled, “Narratives of Identity” was organized by the department on 28-02-2024 & 29-02-2024. The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Urmi Satyan from Pandit Deen Dayal Energy University, Gujarat. Around fifty participants explored the different dimensions and roles of identity through storytelling, cultural perspectives, personal journeys, digital, art and literature.
State level One-Day Orientation Programme on English-Pro-I (A Course Book Designed and Developed by the CCE., A.P.) for the English Faculty of GDCs in A.P
The Commissioner of Collegiate Education, Andhra Pradesh has constituted a team of lesson writers to design a course book for the third-semester students as they don’t have language courses after the second semester in the single major system. It is a matter of pride for the department that Dr K. Padmaja, in charge of the Department of English at Government College for Women(A), Guntur is the co-editor of this communication skills book. An orientation programme to familiarize English teachers with this book was organized by the department on 24-04-2024. This orientation programme was organized on the occasion of ‘English Language Day’ celebrated to commemorate William Shakespeare’s birthday every year. Around 300 English teachers across the state of Andhra Pradesh have participated in this orientation programme and were briefed about activity-based language teaching.

Azaadi ki Amrit Mahotsav: The Department conducted Rangoli, Short Story, and PowerPoint Presentations on 08.2022 to celebrate the spirit of the 75th Independence Day.
Pranam Patriots: Student Extension Activity: The Department organized an extension activity in August, 2022 to celebrate the unsung heroes of India’s Freedom struggle. Students paid homage to freedom fighters with their power point presentations.
One-Day Workshop on Placement Skills: A Threshold to the World of Work:nThe Department conducted a One-Day Workshop on Placement Skills: A Threshold to the World of Work, on 17-09-2022 in collaboration with Veda Vignana Foundation. Dr M. Ganan Sagar, Managing Director of the organization, and Dr Sarat Chandra, Assistant Professor of English, Moulana Azaad Urdu University, Hyderabad, acted as the resource persons.
Soft Skills Training Programme: The Department organized a One-week training program on Soft Skills from 13-02-2023 to 19-02-2023 in collaboration with NAANDI Foundation. Students were trained in Interview Readiness, Job readiness, Problem solving, Group Presentation, Critical Thinking & Digital Identity.
Celebration of World Poetry Day: The Department of English in collaboration with other language departments celebrated ‘World Poetry Day on 21-02-2023. Students were briefed about the aesthetic pleasure derived from poetry. Staff and students contributed with their poems.
English Language Day: The Department celebrated ‘English Language Day’ on 13-04-2023 on the occasion of William Shakespeare’s birthday. Students were advised to read and appreciate literature. Students of B.A., Communicative English & Special English enacted scenes from two of Shakespeare’s plays, ‘The Taming of the Shrew’ & ‘Macbeth’.
Online Guest Lecture on Writing for Media: The Department of English organized an “Online Guest Lecture’ with Mr. Samuel Jonathan, Chief Correspondent, The Hindu on 25-05-2023 & 27-05-2023 to manifest real-time reporting to the students of B.A., Communicative English.
DEPARTMENTAL ACTIVITIES 2021-22
Field Trip to the Vijayawada Book Festival: The department organized a ‘Field Trip’ to the 32nd Vijayawada Book Festival on 10-01-2022 to provide exposure to B.A., Communicative, and Special English students. The students visited nearly 150 book stalls and were informed about some popular publishing houses and the availability of books for different disciplines.
142nd Birth Anniversary of Sarojini Naidu: The department celebrated the 142nd birth anniversary of Sarojini Naidu, “The Nightingale of India’ on 14-02-2022. Students prepared and displayed posters depicting the important events from Sarojini Naidu's life, followed by reciting some of her famous poems.
Inauguration of the Certificate Course in ‘Developing Oral Reading Skills: The department offered a certificate course on ‘Developing Oral Reading Skills’ on 14-02-2022 to improve the reading abilities of identified students with poor pronunciation and modulation.
Celebration of International Mother Language Day: The Department of English in collaboration with the other language departments celebrated International Mother Tongue Day on 21-02-2022. Students from Communicative English and Special English participated in quiz competition and poster presentations.
Student Workshop on Classroom Management: The department conducted a One-Day Workshop on classroom management for the benefit of Communicative English students. Dr K. Vijaya Babu, Officer on Special Duty in the office of the Commissioner of Collegiate Education acted as the resource person for this One-Day Workshop on 05-03-2022.
Guest Lecture on ‘Indianisms’: The Department of English organized a Guest Lecture for first Semester students on 03.2022 with Mr A. V. Ramana Rao, Lecturer in English at Government Degree College Women, Bapatla, Guntur District. The title of his topic was INDIANISMS in English Language. The lecture focused on the colloquial use of English by Indians. Students were briefed about typical Indian English expressions.
Extension Programme with Students: A Student Extension Program was arranged by the Department of English, GCWA, Guntur with the Third Semester B.A. (FE, PEP, CE, TTM) students on 04.2022 at K. V. R. High School, Kothapeta, Guntur. The students took a class for the Tenth class students on Speaking Skills titled "Greetings," "Asking for and Giving Information," "Asking for and giving Directions," and "Making Requests and Responding to Requests." The students gave a demonstration with posters and encouraged the students for their active participation.

Programming Your Mind for Success- Soft Skills Training Programme: The department organised an orientation session on ‘Programming Mind for Success’ on 30-12-2020 in collaboration with ‘Impact Foundation’. Mr. Vyasa Valmiki, corporate trainer conducted the session for third, and first-semester students.
Deeksharambh- Literary Competitions: The department conducted, Essay Writing, Elocution, Spot Painting competitions for the first-semester students on 15-02-2021 & 16-02-2021 as a part of ‘DEEKSHARAMBH’
