The U.N General assembly declared 2023 as the “International Year of Millets - IYO 2023”, as there is alarming increase of lifestyle diseases like diabetes, obesity etc., in recent years. In view of this the departments of Biochemistry & Food technology have organized ‘Webinar on Potential of mighty millets’ on 03-07-2023 by inviting Dr. M. Muthamilarasan, Asst. Profess Dept. of Plant Sciences, University of Hyderabad. He worked on Foxtail Millet, having many publications and rewards on it. Dr M. Muthamilarasan. has gave very clear information on the importance of millets in daily life and about millet cultivation. Millets help for better digestion, dietary fibre and protein which helps to lower glucose and improve insulin response. Hence now a days they most of the diabetic patients are preferring millet as their regular diet. Compared to other millets, foxtail millet having less glycemic index and rich with other mineral content.
The participants learned about the importance of millets in the diet and disease prevention. They specifically explored the benefits of foxtail millet, which is known for its high nutritional value and potential to reduce the risk of various health conditions.

Hands On Session On “Teach with Tech: Navigating ChatGPT in Educationâ€-
An awareness program was conducted by the Department of Biochemistry to explain the trends in technology to all the faculty and students on 14-12-2023. The resource person, Smt B Dorka Vijaya Kumari gave information regarding usage of technology in Teaching & evaluation, mainly focussing on Chat GPT in planning lessons, Power point making, formulating Cos, Pos, PSOs, In framing the syllabus etc. She also gave information regarding an app called Questionpaper.ai for generating a question paper as per blooms taxonomy & as per the model of the question paper.
By the end of the program, the faculty successfully created comprehensive lecture notes, PowerPoint presentations, and objective-type questions based on the provided prompts. These resources were designed to enhance the students' learning experience and provide clear, structured content for their studies. Additionally, students were able to utilize these prompts to generate their own objective questions in preparation for postgraduate entrance exams.

Expert Talk on Career counselling in Medical Coding-
An expert talk was conducted for all the life science students, on unlocking opportunities: career counselling in Medical coding on 20-12-2023. The programme was organized by the Departments of Applied Sciences. Smt R Sireesha, Managing Director, Healtx Healthcare gave a detailed presentation on availability of job opportunities in medical coding covering various aspects such as demand, job market, skills required etc.
The participants have learned a career in medical billing and coding offers numerous benefits, including competitive salaries, remote work flexibility, and ample opportunities for career advancement. Additionally, this field provides a stable job market and the chance to work in various healthcare settings, making it an attractive option for those seeking long-term career growth. A total number of 70 students and 10 faculty members attended the programme.
Workshop on DNA Finger printing
With an aim to provide the participants with a comprehensive understanding of DNA fingerprinting techniques and practical skills through hands-on training sessions, the Dept. of Biochemistry organized Hands on Training on “DNA Finger Printing” in collaboration with Tulasi Seeds Pvt. Ltd, Guntur on 21-12-2023.
In this workshop Students learned about various crucial concepts in molecular biology, including molecular markers, restriction endonucleases, DNA replication, PCR (polymerase chain reaction), and electrophoresis. In addition to theoretical instruction, they gained hands-on experience with these techniques, enabling them to apply their classroom knowledge in practical laboratory settings. This practical experience not only reinforced their understanding of the subject matter but also helped them develop essential technical skills and competencies required for advanced research and professional work in the field of molecular biology. 21 students of Biochemistry along with the faculty members participated in the workshop.
National Science Day
National Science Day in India is celebrated annually on February 28 to commemorate the discovery of “Raman Effect” by Indian Physicist Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman. The occasion also serves as a platform to appreciate and raise public awareness about the contributions of our scientific community toward the development of our nation.
On the occasion of National Science Day, the departments of Applied Life Sciences organized an Essay Writing Competition and Bio Charades event on February 28, 2024, for all students within the Life Sciences disciplines. The students actively participated in these events, expressing their views on various scientific topics through their essays and engaging enthusiastically in the Bio Charades game. The competition and interactive activities provided a platform for students to showcase their knowledge, creativity, and passion for life sciences while also fostering a collaborative and stimulating learning environment.
The event was marked by a lively exchange of ideas and queries, highlighting the students' keen interest and dedication to the field. The program significantly enhanced the students' scientific approach and deepened their interest in the subject. A total of 50 students and 6 faculty members actively participated in the event, contributing to a vibrant and intellectually stimulating atmosphere.
DEPARTMENTAL ACTIVITIES 2022-23
Semester Internship: After completing their 4th semester, the second-year students participated in a one-month internship. Their internships took place at Tulasi Seeds, where they gained hands-on experience in agricultural biotechnology; at Sangam Dairy, where they learned about dairy production and management; and at various hospitals, where they were exposed to different aspects of healthcare and patient management.
Visit to Science Exhibition in Hindu College, Guntur on 01-02-2023: Students visited science exhibitin in Hindu college, Guntur on 01-02-2023. They could explore exhibits in different themes of subjects such as chemistry, zoology, Biology, Geology, History, Physics, Agriculture, Environmental Science, Food Technology, Biochemistry, Microbiology&Biotechnology. Could able to gain exposure to organize an event like exhibition and could get interesting thoughts through some exhibits.
Science Exhibition and Poster presentation: Students made exhibition was organized by III-year students on 04-02-2023, on the occasion of “WORLD CANCER DAY”, organized Poster Presentation by students on the Theme: “Fill the Care Gap”. By exploring various scientific projects and experiments, students are encouraged to ask questions, think critically, and develop a deeper curiosity about the natural world.
Guest Lecture: On the occasion of the “National Science Day- 28th February 2023” with theme Global Science for Global Wellbeing’, the departments of Biochemistry & Microbiology, GCW(A), Guntur and department of Biochemistry, KVR GDC(A), Kurnool conducted a webinar on career opportunities in biological sciences to create awareness on career opportunities in biological sciences so as to reduce the hypocrisy – less opportunities in biological sciences. By attending the online guest lecture students attained high level of involvement and interest in the subject matter, and developed effective problem solving and critical skills working in groups.
Certificate course: Fundamentals of Bioinformatics certificate course is offered by the department of Biochemistry to the life sciences final year students of Biochemistry. 2 credits were offered for the 30 hrs certificate course. As this certificate course is beneficial to each and every student in higher education.
Workshop on Tissue culture and Molecular Biology Techniques: As part of attaining Practical experience, the Dept. of Biochemistry organized Hands on Training on “Tissue Culture & Molecular Biology Techniques” in collaboration with PEARL Labs Guntur on 4-5-2023. By attending the workshop participants have expanded their understanding of the principles and applications of tissue culture, including plant propagation, genetic modification, and disease resistance.
Seminars: Student seminars were organized for the students of Biochemistry in different courses to provide an opportunity to improve their abilities, confidence and communicative skills. Further, these seminar presentations have assigned marks as a part of their formative assessment.

Quiz program: On the occasion of the World Cancer Day the departments of Biochemistry, Food Science & Food technology conducted a Quiz program on 9-2-2022. For all the students screening test was conducted & the selected students were separated into different groups whoever answered the most questions.
Science Exhibition: The main purpose of these exhibitions is to educate and engage students and individuals by showcasing and explaining concepts and experiments. On the occasion of the “National science Day” the departments of Biochemistry, Food Science & Food technology conducted an exhibition on 28-02-2022. Students organized different stalls like Quicker snicker, Blood grouping, Diabetes pathophysiology, Food pyramid, Detecting the common adulteration in food.
SABROSA -Celebration the world of flavours: On the occasion of the “National Nutrition Week” the departments of Food Science, Food technology & Biochemistry conducted an event “SABROSA” on 06-09-2022. Students of these departments participated and prepared different nutritious foods and drinks such as foxtail Millet Payasam, Jowar Kichidi, Mixed Millet Salad, Ragi Boondhi, Ragi Laddu, Spinach Smoothee, Beet Root Smoothe, Infused Water, Cool Lemonade, Different Flavors Of Butter Milk etc. Quiz and fun knowledgeable games based on nutrition were also conducted.

All the students of Food Science, Food Technology and Biochemistry participated in the quiz program enhancing their awareness and understanding of kidney health and the importance of preventive measures.

National Webinar on Management of Nutrition to fight against Diabetes, Obesity and Covid-19-: The departments of Biochemistry and Physical Education of Govt. College for Women (A), Guntur has organized a National Nutrition Webinar – 2020 to the students and faculty on the theme “Management of Nutrition to fight against – Diabetes, Obesity and COVID-19” on 30th September 2020. The Department of Biochemistry invited Dr. P. V. Shelvam Professor and Dean of Education, Annamalai University as Guest of Honour and Dr. P. Manju Pushpa Asst. Professor in Physical Education at Bharathiar University, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu and Dr. Ch. Manjula B-Grade Guest Faculty in Nutrition, Acharya Nagarjuna University, Guntur, Andhra Pradesh as resource persons. K. Jaya Prakash, Dr. S. Veena, Dr. K Saileela Asst. Professors from Department of Education, Annamalai University has acted as the technical resource persons. The webinar gave the detailed knowledge on how Diabetes, Obesity and COVID-19 can be cope up through nutrition.
Quiz program: On the occasion of October as breast cancer awareness month, Department of Biochemistry, Government College for Women (Autonomous), Guntur, has organized the virtual quiz. In the spirit of raising awareness, we brought this virtual quiz to the students and faculty all through the nation. The students and faculty became part of the awareness by attempting the virtual quiz held by Google forms.
Poster presentations: On the occasion of National Cancer Awareness Day, Department of Biochemistry, Government College for Women(Autonomous), Guntur, has organized the presentations by biochemistry students to give awareness to their classmates on 07-11-2020. National cancer awareness Day is observedannually on November 7th to raise national awareness of the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer and various types. The presentations were held by Google meet. Four students have presented on the causes, risk factors, prevention and treatment of various types of cancer. The theme for this year was ‘I Can, We Can’ Based on the theme all the presenters has focused on various types of cancer that are common in India.
Quiz program: On the occasion of World Pneumonia Day, Department of Biochemistry, Government College for Women (Autonomous), Guntur, has organized the virtual quiz at college level. In the spirit of raising awareness, we brought this virtual quiz to the students of our college on 12-11-2020. So to provide awareness on the Pneumonia that too in this pandemic situation, the department has chosen the virtual quiz on ‘World Pneumonia Day’ as the choice to provide awareness.
Poster Competition: Poster competitions were held by Dept. of Biochemistry on 1st Dec 2021 in the department. Around 30 students participated in the competitions and presented on the themes like ending the HIV Epidemic, Structure of HIV, Signs & symptoms of AIDS, Transmission of HIV, Prevention of HIV & AIDS, A Portrait on Life struggles of a Girl with HIV.
Science exhibition: Students of Biochemistry presented biographies and achievements of eminent scientist in Biology & Biochemistry on 21st & 22nd Dec 2020 during the visit of Autonomy Extension Committee Visit. Both students & faculty visited exhibition. More than 150 students were benefitted through this exhibition.
Covid Testing Camp: COVID Tests to Staff & Students in collaboration with DMHO, Guntur were organized by the Dept of Biochemistry on 23-12-2020. The Dept. created awareness on symptoms of COVID and encouraged students & staff to be tested. Explained RT PCR testing process, results and care to be taken if tested positive. Importance of sanitizer & mask at public places.
Short term online training: Short term online training was organized on Testmoz as Online Assessment Tool by the Department of Biochemistry on 8-6-2021. The Dept. of Biochemistry took lead in organizing a workshop on Online Assessment tools. Mrs. Dorka Vijaya Kumari, Lecturer in Biochemistry delivered a hands on session on Testmoz as simple Online Assessment tool to the faculty of Krishna & Guntur districts.
Faculty development training: State Level Faculty Development Training on Online Assessment Tools & Techniques was organized by D S Govt. Degree College for Women, Ongole on 12-6-2021. Mrs B. Dorka Vijaya Kumari acted as resource person for Faculty development training conducted through online mode. Around 423 lecturers got benefited by participating in this workshop.

Field Trip: A field trip was organized by the Dept. of Biochemistry along with Departments of Microbiology and Biotechnology to visit Science exhibition at Chalapathi College of Pharmacy, Guntur on 18th Dec 2019. Students had witnessed several live demonstrations and posters related to different types of vaccines, DNA isolation techniques, demonstration of HPLC, mass spec, Columns, electrophoresis, different types of centrifuges, UV Spectrophotometer, Food charts of various Vitamins related, methods of personal hygiene, exothermic reactions, green house effects, Plant tissue cultures techniques.
Be A Scientist: Students of Biochemistry presented biographies and achievements of eminent scientist in Biology & Biochemistry on 24th and 25th June 2019 during the visit of NAAC Peer team. The Peer team members also have gone through the exhibition of Poster and appreciated the work and enthusiasm among the students. It was organized to inspire students to go for higher education and dream to become a scientist.
Inculcation of Innovative Knowledge to promote Entrepreneurship in Biochemical sciences: Dept. of Biochemistry, ANU, has organized a National workshop on “ Inculcation of Innovative Knowledge to promote Entrepreneurship in Biochemical sciences” on 24-25th Jan 2020. It was primarily planned to provide awareness & opportunities to students of Biochemistry. Our students registered & were nominated by ANU to attend the workshop.
Workshop on Clinical biochemistry: The department of Biochemistry of Govt. College for Women (A) has organized a workshop on Clinical Biochemistry on 8th March 2020 to the final year Biochemistry students who enrolled for cluster. The workshop gives the basic knowledge in diagnosing various diseases. Dr. N. Geetanjali, Rtd Joint Director of APCCE, has addressed the students about the benefits of being a biochemist and has to learn the subject with good interest will enhance the knowledge. Miss. Krishna Durga, who is expertise in Clinical Biochemistry in Amulya Diagnostics was the resource person, and explained all the basic diagnosis required as per the syllabus to undergraduates.
Inter Disciplinary Peer Teaching: The Department of Biochemistry organized Inter Disciplinary Peer Teaching to BSc Botany and BSc Biochemistry students. Explanation of the topic with respective subject student helps the other students to understand well in the concerned topic as students will get aware of the topic while they were explaining and also those who were listening can able to concentrate well without fear.

Student Seminars: Student seminars were conducted by the Dept of Biochemistry to inculcate confidence, to develop leadership qualities, to inspire other students and to improve speaking skills.

Workshop on Bioinformatics: The department has organized the workshop on Bioinformatics to cover the syllabus required in practical sessions by collaborating with the Q Statix Pvt Ltd, Hyderabad. The workshop was conducted on 22nd September 2018, at the Computer Science laboratory. 40 students of Biochemistry students have registered for it.
Elocution: The Department of Biochemistry organized Elocution on Awareness and Prevention of Hepatitis was conducted on the eve of World Hepatitis Day on 28-08-2018. Mrs. N. Praveena Kumari, Lecturer in Microbiology was invited as a Jury. Few of the final year biochemistry students have given their views on the topic.
Guest Lectures: Guest lectures are a highly useful medium to provide exceptional knowledge to students. It helps students to develop multiple skills like critical thinking, reasoning etc. The Department of Biochemistry organized interdisciplinary guest lectures for the benefit of students.
