 DEPARTMENT OF MICROBIOLOGY Departmental activities – 2022-23

  • PPT Presentation Competition on World Hepatitis Day (28-07-22): In observance of World Hepatitis Day, a PPT competition was held for II and III BSc Microbiology students, with 10 students from II MBC participating. The event focused on raising awareness of hepatitis types, pathogenesis, and prevention. Students gained valuable knowledge about the importance and prevalence of hepatitis in public health, with winners receiving prizes.
  • Extension Activity Workshop on Naturopathy (10-08-22): In collaboration with Care Yoga Naturopathy Medical College, a workshop on naturopathy was held from 2 PM to 5 PM, where the uses of yoga, acupuncture, and other therapies were explained. A total of 100 students participated in the workshop, gaining insights into holistic health practices.
  • Model Preparation Competition for International Microorganisms Day (17-09-22): The Microbiology department organized a model preparation competition from 2 PM to 4 PM, showcasing 30 models made by II and III-year students in celebration of International Microorganisms Day. This activity allowed students to apply their theoretical knowledge practically and fostered teamwork, with winners receiving prizes.
  • Essay Writing Competition for World AIDS Day (01-12-22): An essay writing competition was organized from 2 PM to 4 PM on World AIDS Day, with 40 students participating. The event encouraged awareness about HIV/AIDS, and winners were awarded prizes for their outstanding contributions.
  • Industrial Visit to Coca-Cola Beverages Pvt Ltd (01-03-23): 65 students from the Microbiology and Food Technology departments visited Coca-Cola Beverages Pvt Ltd in Atmakur to observe advanced production techniques and microbiological quality control processes. Students toured the production stages, water treatment, quality control, and packaging, while interacting with industry professionals who shared insights on career opportunities and industrial expectations.
  • Guest Lecture on Genetically Modified Crops (28-02-23): In observance of National Science Day, a guest lecture titled "Genetically Modified Crops: Boon or Bane" was held, featuring speakers from Acharya N.G. Ranga Agricultural University and Jana Vignana Vedika. Sixty students learned about the development, advantages, and disadvantages of GM crops, gaining valuable insights into their impact on agriculture in India.
  • National Webinar on Food Processing and Quality Control (06-05-23): A webinar was organized to educate students on food industry techniques, focusing on food processing and quality control. Dr. B. Madhuri discussed food processing steps and extending shelf life, while Mr. K. Anjith Kumar explained quality assurance and control in the beverage industry.\

DEPARTMENT OF MICROBIOLOGY 2021-2022 ACTIVITIES

  • Guest Lecture on Bt Gene and Cotton (23-01-21): The Microbiology department hosted a guest lecture by Dr. Subbaraidu, Jr. Scientist at Tulasi Seeds, on "Bt gene and Bt protein expression in hybrid cotton." He explained the gene's role in pest resistance and its impact on Indian agriculture. Students actively participated and engaged with the speaker.
  • Extension Activity for High School Students (02-03-21): In celebration of National Science Day, the Microbiology department organized an extension activity for 70 high school students. Laboratory equipment was exhibited, with hands-on experiences and PPT presentations by III BSc students to explain advanced research tools. The students showed great enthusiasm and engaged in discussions about careers in life sciences.
  • Guest Lecture on Career Orientation (10-05-21): The Microbiology department organized an online guest lecture by Mr. B. Vikram Kumar, Executive at INTAS Biopharma, on career opportunities in microbiology research. He shared his experiences and encouraged students to pursue higher education and research. Students were engaged and actively participated in the discussion.
  • PPT Competition on Hepatitis (28-07-21): In honor of World Hepatitis Day, the Microbiology department held a PPT competition where 42 students presented on different types of Hepatitis, the global disease scenario, and prevention methods. Participants demonstrated strong knowledge and enthusiasm throughout their presentations.
  • Field Trip to Agricultural Research Station (18-09-21): The Microbiology department organized a field trip for 43 students to Acharya NG Ranga Agricultural Research Station, Amaravathi, to learn about biofertilizer production. Students observed the technology, quality control, and assurance processes involved in mass production. The visit provided practical insights as part of their curriculum.
  • Breast Cancer Awareness Programme (08-10-21): The Microbiology department, in association with Grace Foundation and AP Police, conducted an awareness session on cancer prevention, with a focus on breast cancer. Around 200 students participated, engaging in discussions on various cancers and pledging to support cancer prevention efforts. Seventy students also participated in the Global Grace Cancer Run 2021
  • Expo on Fermented Foods and Probiotics (02-11-21): The Microbiology department organized an expo where 75 students displayed 30 stalls featuring fermented foods and probiotics, including traditional and continental dishes. Students educated visitors on the benefits of fermented foods and the role of probiotics in promoting gut health. The event attracted around 250 visitors, who praised the students' efforts and knowledge.
  • Global Antibiotic Awareness Week (18-11-21 to 24-11-21): To mark Global Antibiotic Awareness Week, Microbiology students presented charts and PowerPoint slides to explain the causes, consequences, and prevention of antibiotic resistance. Around 120 students participated, engaging actively and clarifying their doubts about the topic.

DEPARTMENT OF MICROBIOLOGY 2019-20 ACTIVITIES

  • The Department of Microbiology organized a National Rangoli Competition on Immunology on 22nd August 2019, in collaboration with the Microbiology Society of India. The event, titled "Micro Rangoli," featured 10 teams who created rangoli designs depicting various immunological concepts such as Active Immunity, Passive Immunity, Hypersensitivity, and Antigen-Antibody Interactions. Students explained their designs to visitors, highlighting the immune system's role in defending against pathogens, managing hypersensitivity, and improving vaccines. The event fostered creative demonstrations of complex immunological mechanisms through art.
  • The Department of Microbiology organized an Extension activity on 16th October 2019 to raise awareness about the challenges faced by autistic children and the opportunities available to improve their lives. Students and staff interacted with children from Prabhatha Sindoori Special School, enjoying performances and supporting an exhibition and sale of their handmade products. The event generated funds for the school and increased empathy and awareness among staff and students regarding how to support children with autism.
  • The Department of Microbiology organized a Guest Lecture on “Recent Trends in Microbial Sciences and Vaccine Technologies” on 13th September 2019, delivered by P. Veera Brahmachari, Associate Professor from Krishna University. He discussed advancements in microbial cultures for vaccine development, engaging with 80 students from II and III BSc Microbiology.
  • The Department of Microbiology organized an Industrial Tour to Coca-Cola Beverages, Atmakur, on 25th March 2020 for II and III B.Sc Microbiology The students gained practical insights into beverage production, sterilization techniques, and quality control, with industry experts explaining key processes. The visit provided valuable exposure to real-world manufacturing and hygiene practices.
  • On 15th April 2020, the Department of Microbiology conducted the Samishti Programme, where Mrs. N. Praveena Kumari demonstrated essential microbiology laboratory equipment to I B.Sc (BZC) Botany students as part of their practical curriculum. Students learned about sterilization tools like autoclaves and incubators, enhancing their understanding of microorganism culture techniques. The session aimed to foster collaboration between the departments while providing valuable hands-on learning experiences.
  • The Department of Microbiology conducted a one-day workshop on Mushroom Cultivation on 29th January 2020, providing II & III B.Sc, BA, and B.Com students with hands-on experience in substrate preparation and mushroom harvesting, alongside lectures on economic importance and pest Additionally, a 30-day certificate course was held in
  • December and January, focusing on the nutritional value, financial potential, and technical knowledge required for establishing a mushroom cultivation unit.
  • On 13th February 2020, the Department of Microbiology conducted extension activities in the adopted village of Pulladigunta, including a blood grouping camp and an awareness program on health and III year students engaged with villagers, educating them about cleanliness and personal hygiene, while also hosting a seminar on Corona Virus for school children. The initiative fostered friendly interactions and left the villagers feeling pleased and informed.

DEPARTMENT OF MICROBIOLOGY 2018 -19 ACTIVITIES

  • In view  of  “World  Zoonosis  Day”  Department  of  Microbiology  has  conducted  an  Elocution Competetion on 06.07.2018 for III year Microbiology Students. Students actively participated and shared their ideas about the importance of the day.
  • The department of Microbiology conducted a Rally on Ecofriendly Vinayaka Chavithi. IIIB.Sc Microbiology students Prepared Clay Idols of Ganesh and Playcards explaining the importance of Nature and prevention of pollution.
  • In view of world ozone day Department of Microbiology conducted rally on World Ozone Day. All the students participated enthusiastically.
  • As part of an extension program, our III Year Microbiology students conducted a session for the IX and X class students   of   Fathima   School,   introducing   them   to   various   laboratory   instruments   used   in microbiology. They also discussed advanced technologies in biology, providing the school students with practical insights into modern scientific tools and techniques. The Microbiology Laboratory served as an interactive platform, fostering interest and understanding of scientific equipment and innovations among the younger students.
  • On 10th January 2019, all the staff and III Year Microbiology students participated in the Janmabhoomi Programme in a rural area of Guntur. During the visit, our students educated the local community on the importance of health and hygiene and provided information about various government health schemes designed to benefit the poor and underprivileged. This outreach aimed to raise awareness and promote healthier living practices among the residents.
  • In observance of World Cancer Day, the Department of Microbiology organized an Awareness Programme on Cancer on 4th February 2019. Ameena Syed, Professor at Government Medical College, delivered an insightful session on the different types of cancer, their causes, symptoms, and preventive measures. She also engaged with both students and staff, addressing their individual questions and concerns. The programme was highly successful, raising significant awareness about cancer and its prevention.
