National Cadet Corps (NCC)
The National Cadet Corps (NCC) is a dynamic organization of the Indian Armed Forces focused on youth development. It provides cadets with opportunities for all-round development through military training, social service, and adventure activities, fostering a sense of duty, discipline, and moral values to become responsible citizens and capable leaders.
The NCC wing of Govt. College for Women (A), Guntur, operates under the 10(A) Girls Battalion, Guntur, with the strength of 108 cadets. Lt. Dr. B. Latha, Lecturer in Chemistry serves as Associate NCC Officer for GCW NCC wing.
Vision
To train young women into responsible citizens through a value-based system that nurtures unity, discipline, duty, selfless service, honesty, hard work, and leadership qualities, empowering them to serve society.
Mission
- To instill a sense of social responsibility, encourage cadets to support and uplift the disadvantaged in their neighbourhood communities.
- To provide structured institutional training, including drill practices, that enhances physical fitness and well-being.
- To motivate cadets to participate in state, national, and adventure camps.
- To equip cadets with essential skills in handling arms and weapons.
- To cultivate job skills and leadership qualities that help cadets pursue careers in the armed forces and other government services
Selection process
The selection for enrollment in NCC is open to all students of GCW(A), Guntur on a voluntary basis and participation does not entail any obligation for active military service. A student who joins a bachelor's degree program and enrolls in NCC will have the opportunity to obtain both the B (after 2 years of training) and C (after 3 years of training) certificates.
NCC Training:
The NCC training can be broadly divided as: a) Institutional training, b) Camp training, and c) Social service activities. As per SNCCO, thirty-five parades (105 training periods) per year will be conducted in the first and second years, and thirty parades (90 training periods) will be conducted in the third year as part of institutional training. Additionally, 10-12 days of formal training will be organized as Annual Training Camps or Centrally Organized Camps. Beyond these, cadets participate in various social and community service activities such as Swachhta Abhiyan and awareness rallies.
To be eligible for the B-certificate exam, a cadet must have attended at least 75% of the total training periods specified in the syllabus for the first and second years of training and must have attended at least one Camp. Having an A-certificate is optional, but cadets possessing an A-certificate will be awarded 10 bonus marks
To be eligible for the C-certificate exam, a cadet must have passed 'B' certificate, attended at least 75% of the total training periods specified in the syllabus for the third year of training and must have attended two camps, one of which must be an Annual Training Camp.
Cadets may be granted a maximum one-year extension to appear in the certificate examination if they haven't completed the required camps and training or missed the exam due to illness, end academic exams, calamities, or other valid reasons.
Benefits of NCC:
- Preference is given to B and C certificate holders for positions in Defence Services, Police, Para-Military forces, Fire Services, BSF, Territorial Army, Industrial Security Forces, Public Sectors, and other uniformed services.
- NCC cadets are also granted reserved seats in Indian universities: 60 in Engineering, 16 in Medical, and 6-7% in Post Graduation programs.
- ‘C’ Certificate holders are eligible for vacancies through UPSC and SSC with the exemption of written test (selection is based solely on an interview). They also receive preference for roles such as Civilian Gliding Instructors, Girl Cadet Instructors, NCC lady officers, and Aero/Ship modeling instructors.
- For Army soldier recruitment, NCC cadets receive bonus marks. They also benefit from reservations in many government jobs, especially in State and Central Police and paramilitary forces.
- Academic incentives are available for NCC ‘C’ Certificate holders. Those who participate in the Republic Day parade in New Delhi are exempt from the Common Entrance Exam (CEE) for recruitment into Sol Clk/Skt/Sol Tech and Sol NA positions and will be awarded full marks in place of the CEE. Additionally, top companies, including Sahara India, frequently recruit NCC cadets with ‘C’ certificates.
