Government College for Women (A), Guntur established in 1942, in 10 acres, is fully equipped with laboratories and ICT enabled classrooms and bagged 'B++' grade with a CGPA of 2.92 during the recent NAAC accreditation process(RAF). It has completed 76 years of committed service enabling the rural women students in terms of education and employability. With 25 UG Programs and 4 PG Programs and with CPE, Autonomy and RUSA grants as feathers in its cap, the college is marching to strive for the betterment of Rural Women Students.
The College has 23 departments including Bio-Chemistry, Microbiology and Bio-technology with 1800 students on rolls and several restructured courses. The Institution is also offering scholarships and hostel accommodation for the poor students and takes special care in the case of challenged students.
The college received Autonomy, CPE and RUSA grants for development and the classrooms are being upgraded to provide digital learning experience. The Library of this college is digitized and offers digital editions of books and magazines for enhancing skills.
The staff of the institution are qualified and selected through College Service Commission and work with commitment, dedication, and research orientation. A great number of the staff of this college are Ph.D holders and are acting as Resource Persons, Content Generators, Authors and Research Supervisors. From 2011 to 2017, seven MRPs were completed and six more projects are going on. The teachers are highly committed, follow student-centered methods and most of them are honoured as the best teachers by the State Government and other agencies.
As this is an autonomous institution, it has freedom to revamp the curriculum to match the employability needs and global scholarship demands. This college also offers various need based Add – on Courses and Certificate Courses with additional inputs filling the gaps in the curriculum.
As this institution is a District Resource Centre, it offers training to teachers of the neighbouring colleges in student – centered methods and latest aspects of knowledge.
The college has been conducting seminars and workshops for teachers and students in the latest aspects of teaching and learning to develop Socratic thinking.
By planning a qualitative academic calendar and assessment calendar well in advance and preparing the schedules of formative and summative assessment in consultation with Controller of Examinations along with curricular, co-curricular and extension activities the academic council of the college has been successful in offering creative and critical thinking skills with a practical orientation.
Along with curricular and co-Curricular Aspects, the college lays emphasis on the physical and ethical aspects of students by involving them in sports and games and by incorporating Human Values and Professional Ethics as part of the curriculum. Our students bag prizes in various inter-university tournaments and get selected for nationals.
The institution is conscious of the eco system and from time to time enough focus is laid on campus cleanliness and beautification through measures like avoiding plastic on the campus. Green cover is maintained and rain - water harvesting is taken up to preserve the water tables during summer. The staff and the students along with the NSS and NCC units of the college adopt villages and spread the green consciousness among villages that surround the institution. The staff and the students of the college campaigned against Open Defecation System in the surrounding villages as part of the Swatch Bharat programme.
The college has a separate Placement Cell (Jawahar Knowledge Centre) , which trains the students in Communication Skills and Soft Skills and provides jobs to students through linkages and campus interviews. The institution has MOUs with employing agencies for regular campus drives and so far it has placed 2897 students on jobs during the last five years and 55 during 2017-18 from April till date.
Fibergrid, a digital networking platform is sanctioned to this college to connect it digitally to other government colleges to provide extended academic support to other institutions using the expertise of the staff of this institution.
The college enjoys a good number of admissions every year when all other institutions failed to attract students. It is due to thetransparent administrative measures, good teaching-learning and evaluative practices, professional ethics, graduation outcomes and outreach activities.
